From Mentoring to Impact: Competitive Strategies for Village Cooperatives to Grow Sustainably

Village development needs more than programmes — it needs mentoring that is relevant, practical, and sustained. Collaboration between village communities, cooperatives, and mentoring organisations is essential. Rasamala Desa believes that strengthening the village economy starts with the local actors closest to the community — cooperatives among them. That commitment was realised through mentoring on Implementing Cooperative Performance Indicators Based on the Balanced Scorecard at the PEKKA Kencana Consumer Cooperative in Cianjur, West Java, held on Friday, 23 January 2026 in Sukanagalih Village, Cianjur. The session was framed as a Workshop on Competitive Strategy Models in the Services Industry to Win the Market.

Village Cooperatives and the Competitiveness Challenge

In an increasingly competitive market, village cooperatives face a dual challenge. On one hand, they must uphold social values and solidarity with members. On the other, they must compete professionally to stay relevant and sustainable.
This mentoring created a shared learning space to challenge the idea that cooperatives do not need a business strategy. On the contrary, cooperatives need a clear strategic direction to deliver real economic benefits for their members.

“This training opened our eyes to the fact that village cooperatives must also be managed with a clear, measurable strategy so they can grow sustainably and truly benefit members.”

Three Key Strategies to Win the Market

Through interactive sessions and practical discussion, participants were introduced to three core competitive strategies in the services industry that village cooperatives can apply:

  1. Smart Cost Efficiency
    • Cooperatives are encouraged to manage costs carefully without sacrificing service quality for members.
  2. Service Differentiation
    • Building distinctive value through member-centred services that commercial competitors struggle to match.
  3. Focus on Member Segments
    • Prioritising the needs of core member groups so programmes stay relevant and impactful.

By combining the Balanced Scorecard with these strategies, PEKKA Kencana Cooperative strengthens institutional discipline while staying competitive in the services market — keeping social mission and business performance aligned.
